Implants are a great option for restoring your smile to optimal health, function, and beauty. If you are only missing one tooth, one implant plus one replacement tooth will do the trick. If you are missing several teeth in a row, a few strategically placed implants can support a permanent bridge (a set of replacement teeth). Similarly, if you have lost all of your teeth, a full bridge or full denture can be permanently fixed in your mouth with a strategic number of implants.
If you are a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. The only way to know for sure is to schedule an implant consultation at one of our Tulsa, Sand Springs, Pryor Creek, Bartlesville, Okmulgee, Muskogee, and Claremore, OK dental offices.

Anatomy of an Implant
An implant is a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium: the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal that is well-suited to pairing with human bone. A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Permanent teeth are more stable and feel more like natural teeth.
Advantages over Dentures or Bridges
Implants are a great option to replace a missing tooth without affecting the surrounding teeth. When a bridge is placed, healthy tooth structure on the adjacent teeth needs to be removed in order to fit the bridge in place. Dentures and partial dentures need to be removed on a daily basis, and often make eating and speaking difficult. An implant stays in place and does not need to be taken in and out of the mouth.
Implant Treatment and Care
The implant surgery itself should not take longer than an hour. If a tooth is being taken out or bone grafting is needed in addition to the implant, it may take longer. Implant placement is done with the use of local anesthetic; however, if you have dental anxiety, we can utilize several other sedation options.
Once the implant is placed there is typically a waiting period of three to six months before we can place the restoration (crown) on the implant. This is because the implant needs time to fully integrate with your bone.
Recovery varies based on your age and health. Post treatment discomfort should fade over a few days. Healing will continue for a few weeks but discomfort is not expected that long. After the procedure you want to be careful about keeping the implant area clean. Typical activities can be resumed after 24 hours. Complete post-care instructions will be explained during your appointment, and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Your implant should last a very long time, especially if you care for it like a natural tooth with brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings twice a year. It is more likely that you will need to replace the crown before needing a new implant. Think of your implant like a new roof on a house. The house (implant) should be there a long time. The roof (crown) may need some work done every ten or 15 years.
