New Year, New Smile: 5 Steps to Oral Health

December 29th, 2016

Hello 2017! It’s a brand new year and that always brings new opportunities to change for the better. Many of us are already writing down resolutions and goals we’d like to accomplish this year. If you’re wanting to take better care of your smile this year, here are five steps you can add to your lifestyle change:

Commit to floss

Brushing your teeth after every meal is a great start to achieving a healthy smile, but it can’t stop there. The truth is, just brushing is not enough to get every last food particle from in between your teeth. If you want your teeth to truly be clean and bright, you’ll need to commit to flossing regularly. Keep floss on your bathroom counter where you can see it and write a little reminder to floss on your bathroom mirror so you don’t forget. You can even pack extra floss in your purse or work bag so you don’t forget to floss while at work or school.

Eat healthy foods

Brushing and flossing are great for your oral health, but what are you feeding your body? Dairy foods are high in calcium and are just wonderful for your teeth. Fibrous foods like crunchy carrots and apples call up saliva and scrub away at plaque and other food debris. Eating a healthy diet after the holidays is a great way to start your year feeling healthy and strong.

Decrease sugar intake

If you want a healthy mouth this year, you should consider limiting your sugar intake. Not only would it be good for your overall health, but you would significantly decrease your chances of experiencing tooth decay and cavities. The best way to limit your sugar intake is to simply reduce the amount of sweet treats you buy from the store. Try substituting sugary snacks with fruit and nuts and substitute soda with sparkling water or other sugar-free drinks like La Croix.

Try teeth whitening

If your teeth could use a little rise and shine for the new year, we’d highly recommend teeth whitening treatments! Teeth whitening is a great way to add some polish and confidence to an already great smile. During your next appointment, ask us about your teeth whitening options; we’d be happy to help.

Schedule a dental appointment

Finally, if you can’t remember the last time you went to the dentist, it’s definitely time to schedule an appointment. If you are experiencing sensitivity or any kind of pain at all, it’s very important to make an appointment as soon as possible to address the problem before it gets worse. We’d would love to help you and your family get a head start on your dental health goals this year. We have several locations throughout Oklahoma; contact the office nearest you!

5 Ways to Attack Bad Breath

October 14th, 2016

Bad Breath-Spring Dental-tulsa-okEven the most confident person in the world can experience self-consciousness from having bad breath. While bad breath can actually be an indicator of a more serious dental condition, there are definitely ways you can attack bad breath every day.

Read on for 5 ways to get rid of bad breath:

Brush and floss often
One of the culprits of bad breath is plaque that collects bacteria on teeth. Food and debris caught in between teeth definitely doesn’t help the situation either.

We recommend that our patients brush and floss at least twice a day. Increasing brushing and flossing can be a great way to knock out smelly bacteria. Pack a travel size toothbrush/toothpaste to keep in your desk or bag if you work full-time or go to school and aren’t at home during the day.

Try a tongue scraper
Probably the biggest culprit of bad breath is the bacteria that builds up on your tongue. It’s important to gently brush off the film of bacteria on your tongue, but most people find their toothbrush too big and clunky for those hard to reach places. For around $3-$5, you can buy a tongue scraper at your local drugstore to get rid of bad breath causing bacteria. Just a word of warning: don’t scrape too hard!

Avoid stinky foods
Onions and garlic are notorious for causing lingering bad breath, despite brushing and flossing!

The best way to get rid of the problem is to avoid these foods altogether, especially in social settings like work or parties, where you typically talk and laugh with people.

Rinse your mouth after eating
In addition to brushing and flossing, mouthwash helps knock out bad breath and leaves your mouth feeling extra clean and fresh, especially if you’re not around your toothbrush. Rinsing your mouth out with just water after you eat to flush out food particles and debris stuck on your teeth.

Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing gum can freshen your breath, but make sure you’re getting sugar-free. Typically, gum has sugar in it, and sugar feeds off the bacteria in your mouth. Your best bet for gum would be something minty-fresh without the sugar. Editor’s note: please don’t substitute chewing gum for brushing and flossing :)

If you’ve tried all these things yet still experience lingering bad breath, it could be your body trying to tell you something. Schedule an appointment at one of our Spring Dental offices and we’ll help you get to the root of the problem.
